Our genes can influence what we look like, our personal traits and also our health. Humans have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) per cell which carry our genetic material or code and this is unique to each person. A goldfish has 94 chromosomes. Genes are found on the chromosomes and humans have 25,000 to 30,000. Bacteria can have several hundred to several thousand genes. Each human cell has 3 meters of DNA. Our genome is our complete set of genetic instructions which contains our DNA.
Everybody has two copies of each gene, one from their mother and one from their father and this is what makes each of us unique. It is also what contributes to diversity and similarities in families.
Our genome is influenced by where we live, what we eat and toxins in the environment around us. Genes can be switched on (activated) and off by our environment. We all have Snp’s (single nucleotide polymorphisms) or variations on our genes which can make us more susceptible to certain conditions such as heart disease. This does not mean that we will definitely develop the condition but our diet and lifestyle may trigger it.
We offer genetic profiling for predisposition to some health conditions. This enables us to tailor your nutrition and lifestyle plan to your specific requirements and create a preventative health plan. We do not offer genetic testing without a consultation which includes counselling. We also provide a treatment plan and we may ask to involve your GP in your care plan.
The genetic profiling tests we provide are:
